We recently conducted a comprehensive split test investing $25,000 on Instagram Reels ads and $25,000 on TikTok ads for the same B2C product campaign. The results revealed surprising insights that challenge conventional wisdom about these platforms.
Performance Metrics:
TikTok delivered a lower cost-per-click ($0.42 vs $0.68 on Instagram) and higher engagement rates (8.3% vs 4.7%). However, Instagram Reels showed superior conversion rates (2.8% vs 1.9%) and lower cost-per-acquisition ($32 vs $45).
Audience Quality:
Instagram's more mature user base and integrated shopping features resulted in higher-value customers with 34% higher average order values. TikTok excelled at brand awareness and top-of-funnel metrics, with 3x more shares and saves per view.
Creative Requirements:
TikTok demands more native, authentic content that feels organic to the platform. Polished brand videos underperformed significantly. Instagram Reels allowed for more branded, professional content while still maintaining performance.
Recommendation:
For direct response campaigns with immediate ROI goals, Instagram Reels currently delivers better returns. For building brand awareness and reaching younger demographics (18-24), TikTok remains unmatched. The optimal strategy combines both platforms in a full-funnel approach: TikTok for awareness and Instagram for conversion.
