What to Include in an Email Welcome Series
A simple structure for welcoming new subscribers, setting expectations, and guiding them toward relevant information.
By Bloom Brand Labs · · 6 minute read
A welcome series begins the relationship between a brand and a new subscriber. Its purpose is to confirm the signup, deliver what was promised, and help the person understand what kind of communication will follow.
Send confirmation promptly
Thank the subscriber, restate what they signed up for, and provide any requested resource. Use a recognizable sender name and make contact information available.
Introduce the brand with relevance
Explain what the business does through the subscriber’s interests rather than a long company history. Point toward the services, resources, or topics most likely to help them.
Build the series around useful steps
- Message one: confirm the signup and deliver the promise
- Message two: answer a common early question
- Message three: explain the business’s approach or point of view
- Message four: invite the subscriber to explore a relevant next step
The number of messages should reflect the amount of useful information available. A shorter focused sequence is better than sending filler.
Use automation responsibly
Stop promotional messages when a subscriber takes the intended action. Review links, offers, and claims regularly. Make preference controls and unsubscribe options easy to use.
Evaluate the relationship
Look at clicks, replies, unsubscribes, subsequent website actions, and the quality of inquiries. Open rates can provide context but should not be treated as a complete measure.
A good welcome series is clear, helpful, and honest. It sets expectations the ongoing email program can continue to meet.
